they nailed stone words above the chalkboard,
sixteen inches wide, twenty inches tall.
children write equations underneath it,
while commandments hang—judging them all.

public schools, painted with scripture,
freedom bent into someone’s law.

they call it “heritage,” call it “foundation,”
but the tablets feel heavy, carved into skin.
