Sir Keir Starmer knew there was no fiscal black hole, yet still backed Rachel Reeves as she warned the public about a huge financial shortfall to justify tax rises.
Downing Street confirmed Starmer approved her speech, even though official forecasts showed her fiscal rules were on track and the OBR downgrade did not create a funding gap.
The OBR later released details showing Reeves had overstated the shortfall while planning a £30bn tax raid. This sparked anger inside Labour, with some saying Reeves and Starmer are now politically “tied together” and both face serious questions.
Reeves is under pressure to quit and is now facing an FCA inquiry after Tories accused her of causing market volatility with misleading comments. She is also expected to be questioned in Parliament and grilled in media interviews.
