Thanks for tuning in to another episode of "What's Wrong With My Lawn". This week we encounter a couple that has some Green lawn stripes, melting out fungus, red thread and over watering. How to fix odd lawn striping.

At first glance the lawn doesn't look that bad until you notice these 12" lines that are perfectly straight that zig zag through there lawn.

Green lawn stripes, melting out fungus, red thread and over watering. How to fix odd lawn striping

This lawn had a lot going on. The color of the lawn stripes is a very nice dark green. Outside of the zigzag green stripes was hazy brown. The hazy brown parts were a mixture of grass that had melting out fungus, leaf spot fungus, and lack of water.

The mixture of colors was a combination of a period of lack of water, too much water and lack of nutrients being taken up by the grass. The nutrients were being tied up in the soil due to a nitrogen deficiency.

Lawn stripes can be a very fun thing to have. This on the other hand was not so fun and not a traditional lawn stripe caused by a striping lawn mower.

The color indicated the history of the lawn being too dry, then too wet. Come to find out there was a fire on the hillside that went out of control. Local authorities cut off access to all secondary water in an effort to fight the fire to save the homes. In the process the lawn became drought stressed. It took local authorities a few weeks to control the fire. Afterward people were allowed to water again. Most people overwatered to get the lawns out of drought stress. A common side affect to overwatering is leaf spot and melting out fungus. This lawn has both as a result of the overwatering. To top it off it rained in the area for 10 days straight. The lawn was also showing signs of red thread. Red thread is a common indication of lack of Nitrogen in the soil.

The water tests showed the soil was still deficient in water levels. I used my ams soil probe to measure water levels. The ams soil probe pulls plugs that allow me to see what's happening in the soil. The roots looked happy and healthy. The soil in one area of the front yard was a loam-clay mix and the other part was mostly clay. The clay was holding more water than the loam mixed with clay. however the area that had the most water has the most issues.
