Detective Reveals Evidence That Made Paul Caneiro the Prime Suspect

The power was cut. A live 9mm round sat on the back porch. And then the detective learned the victim's brother had a fire at his own house that same morning.

Detective Richard Zarillo was the lead Colts Neck investigator who responded to 15 Willow Brook Road on November 20, 2018. He was the first to examine Keith Caneiro's body on the lawn. What he found, and what he learned while processing the scene, would make Keith's brother Paul the prime suspect by the end of that day. Zarillo describes the electrical meter ripped from the panel, the ammunition near an open door, and the 3 AM shots fired call that suddenly made sense. The defense maintains Paul is innocent and has challenged the investigation from the start. No confession exists in this case.

📖 CASE BACKGROUND

November 20, 2018: Firefighters found Keith Caneiro, 50, shot five times on his front lawn. Inside the burning mansion: his wife Jennifer, 45, and children Jesse and Sophia, all stabbed. The children died from smoke inhalation.

Hours earlier, a fire broke out at Paul's home eleven miles away. Prosecutors call it a "ruse" to divert suspicion. The motive: Keith had discovered Paul stealing from their businesses and family trusts, and sent an email cutting off Paul's $225,000 salary the night before.

Paul Caneiro, 59, has been jailed without bail for over seven years. If convicted, he dies in prison.
