The Ministry of Education's Department of Adult Education has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting digital education among adult learners and early school dropouts.
This was shared during the commemoration of the Adult Education Week at Rundu.
The week, held under the theme "Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era", celebrates the achievement of adult learners each year and promotes literacy across the country.
It encourages individuals aged 15 and above to participate in adult education.
"The ministry, through the directorate of adult education, has in recent years identified its efforts at advocating for integration of skills development as a reasonable pathway for adult learners and other out-of-school youth to the ministry administration. Those programmes were positively received by the communities, so it is pleasing to witness the growing demands across various skill sets," said Elizabeth Da Silva, Acting Senior Education Officer in the Kavango East Region.
It was emphasised that adult education and literacy encompass skills development projects aimed at improving the lives of adult learners.
Da Silver highlighted that digital literacy is a right, not a luxury, as it serves as a bridge to opportunity, dignity, employment, entrepreneurship, and voice.
The Ministry acknowledges that each stakeholder involved in this endeavour brings a unique perspective, which is essential in shaping the future of adult education.
"This can be achieved through a number of implementable actions, to mention but a few: strengthening digital skills training with adult education programmes, starting with the purpose of intervention, such as using mobile phones as learning tools."
Da Silva emphasised that this year's theme is a call to action to ensure that no deserving adult is left behind in a world that is rapidly changing.
A former adult education learner, Emiliye Sikarakatji, shared her testimony. "Some of us, when asked to write our names back in the day, would not know what to do. I did not even know how to sign. But when I joined literacy, I really learnt a lot. We started off struggling. The teacher would hold my hand and show me how to write. As time went by, I started writing my name well, just because of literacy, and now I can say, 'How are you? Thank you very much'."
