Rain or shine, Old Sacramento rings in the New Year with early fireworks

Crowds are expected to gather in Old Sacramento for the annual Countdown on the Cobblestones New Year’s Eve celebration, even as rain falls across the region. Organizers say the event, including a fireworks show, will go on rain or shine, with this year’s countdown scheduled for 9 p.m. instead of midnight. Sacramento police say they are increasing patrols throughout Old Sacramento and downtown due to heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Visitors from across Northern California and beyond say they’re still making the most of the festivities, while local businesses welcome the added police presence and early crowds. Organizers say events are expected to wrap up around 10 p.m., with hopes the earlier schedule creates a more family-friendly atmosphere.
