This latest bit of Retro Tech (or maybe this should class as Vintage Tech), a Burroughs, Class 8, Portable, Sterling Adding Machine (made somewhere in the 1930s), came in for repair plus a clean & service.
It was sort of working - when you typed in a number it would print out ok but the totals weren't working, it just printed the maximum amount of 999 pounds, 19 shillings and 11 old pence. It's not unusual for old oil to become solid and act like glue on the small moving parts - someone had obviously looked at the machine before me because there was fresh grease applied here and there. After much head scratching, I finally tracked down the sticking lever, freed it up and then everything worked fine. The print heads needed cleaning because the centre of some of the numbers was clogged up, other than that it just needed an oil, clean and polish.
