Barry Sullivan, who is 6'3", plays Sheriff Pat Garrett in The Tall Man, and Clu Gallager plays Billy the Kid.

In the first episode, "Garrett and the Kid" (September 10, 1960), Garrett comes to Lincoln, which the show depicts as a gold-mining boomtown, as the new deputy sheriff. He quickly learns that a crooked saloon owner named Paul Mason (Robert Middleton) runs the town, including the marshal, Dave Leggett (Denver Pyle). Mason tries to hire Billy to assassinate Garrett when he thinks his power is in danger, not knowing that the two are now friends. Vaughn Taylor plays Judge Riley in this episode, and King Donovan plays a Mason henchman.

As Rita, one of Billy's girlfriends, Marianna Hill appeared in numerous episodes. Robert Lansing played John H., a frontier dentist, gambler, and gunfighter, in one episode. In the episode "Rovin' Gambler," "Doc" Holliday has a role.
