Intense sustained winds with blowing snow in northern Velebit on December 8th 2012. Ascent towards the Alan mountain pass. Bura is a very strong cold wind that blows from the northeast onto the Adriatic region of Croatia - most common in winter - occurs when cold air crosses the mountains from the east and descends to the coast. It is commonly classified as a gravity wind. It often reaches speeds of more than 100 km (60 miles) per hour and has been known to knock people down and overturn vehicles.
220.7 kms per hour is the speed record measured on February 4th 2012 (bridge to Krk island).
248.4 kms per hour is the top speed of wind ever measured in Croatia on December 21th 1998 - blowing to Maslenica from Velebit South (DHMZ data - Pavle Balenovic, Ladislav Radoslovic).
