Released in October 2011, Dark Souls is the sequel to cult hit Demon's Souls. Players traverse an open, minimalist world and gain the experience necessary to take on gigantic bosses. The game's subtitle was Prepare to Die, and the difficulty was hyped, but really, the game just punishes mistakes by giving enemies about the same amount of power players have. Dark Souls was well received by game critics and is known for its considerable difficulty, which has prompted much interest and discussion. By May of 2012, Namco announced that 1.19 million units had been sold in the US and Europe, with another 340,000 sold in Japan.
