In this Jazz Piano Tutorial we explore how to create an interesting melodic contour in your improvisation by using octave displacement and pivot arpeggios. This involves playing a phrase, but shifting a note up or down by an octave and continuing the phrase in the new octave. This creates a more jagged melodic contour by introducing larger intervals in your melodic line.
