Kabul’s iconic Ariana Cinema, a cultural landmark that survived decades of war and political upheaval, has been demolished. Opened in the early 1960s, the cinema once entertained generations of Afghans with Bollywood hits and Hollywood action films.

Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 and a ban on most forms of entertainment, all cinemas were ordered to close. Authorities later decided the historic building would be torn down to make way for a new shopping complex. The demolition marks the end of a beloved symbol of Kabul’s cultural life.
