Spring 1942: America's weapons crisis. The Thompson submachine gun cost $200+ and took 20+ hours to build. The solution? A crude $20 weapon designed by car makers in 90 days that German patrols learned to fear.
In the spring of 1942, America faced a critical problem: the iconic Thompson submachine gun was too expensive and too slow to manufacture for total war. Each one cost over $200 and required skilled gunsmiths working for more than 20 hours.
The answer came from an unlikely source—General Motors' Guide Lamp Division, a company that made car headlights. In just 90 days, they designed the M3 submachine gun, a weapon so crude that soldiers immediately nicknamed it the "Grease Gun."
Built from stamped steel and wire at a cost of only $20-$25, the M3 looked like a mechanic's tool. Soldiers doubted it would survive combat. They were wrong.
