April 3, 2005 - Morgan City - While preparing to depart Morgan City, a visitor noticed the crew struggling with the Alemite gun. He measured the unique, extra-large fittings on the rods specific to SP locomotives. After backing out of the stub track, the crew proceeded on the main crossed the Atchafalaya River and stopped at Baldwin, LA for a Flag-Stop visit from local tribe members. While parked, UP and Amtrak trains passed by. After they passed, the crew moved the train back onto the main and ran mostly under advanced approach and approach signals, maintaining their 40 mph max speed. A 6-year-old girl, Deana Mae, returned with a Moon Pie and Pepsi.
Afterward, the crew continued at 40 mph, arriving on time at New Iberia. They backed onto L&D RR’s track and tied the train down for the night. The visitor returned with custom-machined lubrication systems for the crew’s fittings.
