“Emergency call system malfunction” warning in BMW: Reasons

The message saying “Emergency call system malfunction” or also “Emergency call system unavailable” in your BMW means there are temporary or constant issues with the Telematics Control Box. This is the control unit that has all the controls over various wireless communication activities in your vehicle.
The TCB in your BMW is located in the area of the roof antenna, and, in most cases, the roof liner will need to go off before you reach it. In some cars, you may have an easier access with the help of a removable part of the roof liner.
These modules may be damaged because of a water leak through antenna or there are issues with the backup battery in these modules. The battery needs to be OEM only if you decide to replace it. But if you see this message just once, this may be a software glitch and you shouldn’t worry much about it.
