What is Rueda?
Rueda de Casino (or simply Rueda) is a dynamic, social style of Cuban salsa dancing where multiple couples form a circle (rueda means "wheel" in Spanish) and perform synchronized dance moves called out by a single leader or "caller".
Key Characteristics
Circle Formation: Dancers form a wheel shape, facing inward, with each person paired up.
Caller-Led: A designated person calls out or uses hand signals for a series of moves, which all couples attempt to execute simultaneously.
Partner Swapping: Many of the movements involve frequent and rapid partner exchanges, adding an element of spontaneity and excitement to the dance.
Synchronized Moves: The goal is for everyone in the circle to perform the same movement at the same time, which requires concentration and teamwork.
Social & Energetic: It is a highly interactive and joyful social activity, fostering a strong sense of community and fun among participants.
Origins and History
Rueda de Casino originated in the 1950s in Havana, Cuba, at recreational clubs such as the Club Casino Deportivo, which is where the name "Casino" comes from. The dance style evolved from a mix of Cuban dances, including Son Cubano, Cha-Cha-Cha, and Afro-Cuban Rumba.
Global Reach
Rueda de Casino has spread globally and is popular in many countries. While a basic set of moves is generally standard, different groups and regions often have unique calls and variations, sometimes referred to as "dialects". International events and competitions, including large-scale flash mobs, are held regularly to celebrate this vibrant dance style.
