Luton Air Raid Shelters 4K FULL

Luton was a target for Nazi bombers owing to the many factories in the town producing military equipment and components.

Four deep air-raid shelters were build in Luton during the Second World War, and these still remain in place today. The Beech Hill shelter was located under Conway Road and Dunstable Road in Bury Park. It ran for 294 yards and in wartime had a capacity of 1,411 people. The Upper George Street shelter in the town centre was located under Alma Street, Inkerman Street and Gordon Street. It ran at varying levels for 392 yards and held 1,881 people. The Albert Road shelter also covered Hibbert Street and Arthur Street. It was 460 yards long and held 2,208 people. The largest of Luton’s deep shelters was located in High Town. Running under Midland Road, High Town Road and Dudley Street, it was 542 yards long and held, at full capacity, 2,600 people. The construction of the four shelters cost a total of £70,000. A proposed fifth shelter in Park Street was ultimately abandoned.
