This past Summer (2025), IT COMES IN WAVES – a floating public art installation by Toronto-based artist Ben Johnston transformed the Harbour Square Park Basin into a poetic reflection of rhythm, emotion, and change.
This short film looks back at the making of IT COMES IN WAVES – from welding and assembly to the moment it floated in Toronto’s Inner Harbour. Experience the artistry, engineering rigor, and the meticulous collaboration that brought this floating phrase to life.
Commissioned by Waterfront Toronto as part of our Temporary Floating Art Program, this installation featured bold yellow letters that drifted, glowed, and shifted with the wind and waves – evoking the cyclical nature of movement and reminding us that everything, like water, flows in rhythm.
Fabrication was led by Trevor Wheatley and Cosmo Dean with a dedicated team of makers, the piece blended typography and sculpture to create an ever-changing encounter between language, light, and landscape.
