Mount Dempo, 3142 above sea level, is the highest stratovolcano in South Sumatra province that rises above Pasumah Plain near Pagar Alam and adjacent with Bengkulu Province. Seven craters are found around the summit. A 400-metre (1,300 ft) wide lake is found at the north-west end of the crater complex.
Despite the terrible mismanagement from our guide, which could end in a terrible way, we still managed to summit both Dempo and Merapi.
We were supposed to start at 06:30, and 3 of our porters only showed up at 08:30 without the guide, the cook and 2 other porters. Our porters did not carry any food, they were carrying incomplete things. As an example, one was carrying a stove without nesting, a tent without frame. The guide was supposed to pack this properly, which did not happen.
We had to ask for food from a group of hikers at shelter 2. We had no tent and no food until 6 pm. Our 3 porters were not given any food by the guide since the morning. Our guide, cook and 2 other porters did not leave basecamp until almost noon. And they had all of our survival kit with them. It was not until 19:30 when they arrived at shelter 2. We could have suffered from hypothermia.
All the logistics that we had asked them to buy were not even consumed by us. Coming back from summit the next morning, they did not cook anything proper for us. This guide and his group of porters should be banned from ever guiding any hiker as this could cause potential death or accidents. (send me a message for the details of the guide)
