Let’s talk the new POPI Act.

In this edition, we discuss South Africa’s new data privacy legislation, the Protection of Personal Information Act, normally referred to as POPI or POPIA.

At a time when data privacy is becoming top of mind for many people, the act aims to give greater protections over the collection and use of consumer data, while placing increased responsibility on parties or organisations that collect personal information or data. The act is also part of the country’s effort to tighten up its cyber security as cyber criminal activity has ramped up in recent years.

We look at the act’s possible implications for consumers, organisations and business considerations going forward.
