Cold nights settled over the smallholding this week, the kind that make the breath hang in the air and the ground crisp underfoot. We brought in the lambs ahead of the storm, bedded Dexter down with fresh straw, and prepared the old processing area one last time.
By Sunday evening, the freezer was stocked with diced lamb, mince and chops for the months ahead, and the garden had offered up its own additions of leeks, beetroot, carrots and a stout little parsnip that had outgrown the depth of the bed.
Steven added an annex to Dexter's shelter, and as darkness fell, we hung the first Christmas lights of the season. A small glow against the cold, but enough to make the whole place feel different. The magic of Christmas has arrived on the smallholding.
