Project Manta is a group of scientists on a mission to solve one of the ocean's greatest mysteries: where do the giant manta rays of Australia go for six months of the year? With wingspans up to seven meters, these creatures are the largest fish in the sea, yet shockingly little is known about their movements, life cycles, or global population. For years, these intelligent giants would vanish from the coast, leaving researchers to worry they were migrating out of protected waters and into commercial fishing grounds. Using underwater listening stations and photo identification of their unique 'fingerprint' belly spots, the team tracked the rays across 400 km of ocean.
