Spec Miata Stories With Loni Unser | What It’s Like To Race a Miata

Loni Unser let us ride shotgun in her first ever race car, a 1997 Mazda Spec Miata, and showed us some tips on driving a Spec Miata fast.

Loni raced with Lucy the Miata from 2017-2019. Lucy has 120 HP, with a 1.8 L 4-cylinder engine. Racing a Spec Miata is super intense because you’ll have 30-70 car fields where everyone is packed close together.

Since this was Loni’s first race car, she learned a lot about racing close, driving with precision, and not making mistakes, because the slightest misstep will lead to you getting passed by a dozen cars.

One big reason why Loni loved racing with the Spec Miata is because it forced her to get good at bump drafting and working with other cars. To get a fast lap in qualifying rounds, you want to try bump drafting another car because it will make you and that other car a little faster with that extra horsepower.
