The date, personnel and location of this recording are all unknown. It's likely that it was made in 1969 and is possibly an out take from the Reader's Digest recording that Lenny did in October of that year, which featured 'Lullaby of Birdland' and two flamenco pieces. The session was probably recorded in Nashville although it may have been recorded at the RCA studio in Toronto. The bassist and drummer are not credited on the album and no studio logs from this session exist.
Lenny had been playing a Chet Atkins-like arrangement of 'Mr. Sandman' since he was fourteen or fifteen. (See the album 'Boy Wonder') He opens the tune here using a very similar arrangement before playing several choruses of it in his own inimitable style with the trio's straightforward backing.
