Dopamine IV Drip Calculation & Nursing Considerations Pharmacology Implications

Dopamine IV drip calculation practice for nursing students and nurses. This video provides a quick pharmacology review over the drug Dopamine and the nursing considerations, and demonstrates how to solve IV Dopamine drip calculations. Dosage and calculation problems can be difficult, but you can learn how to do this using dimensional analysis.

Dopamine is a beta adrenergic agonist. It’s considered a vasopressor with positive inotropic effects. This means that Dopamine causes vasoconstriction of the vessels, which will increase the blood pressure, systemic vascular resistance, and cardiac output. Dopamine also increases the heart's contractility (so it beats stronger).

In low doses, Dopamine can cause renal vasodilation. This will increase the blood flow to the kidneys and increase urinary output. However, high doses of Dopamine can lead to renal vasoconstriction.

Dopamine is a weight-based medication and is ordered in mcg/kg/min. Infusion rates can vary between 2-20 mcg/kg/min.

Dopamine Nursing Considerations include: continuous EKG and blood pressure monitoring (monitor for significant tachycardia), assess urinary output, monitoring infusion site (extravasation is a risk and can lead to tissue ischemia). If extravasation occurs, Phentolamine will need to be administered to avoid the toxic effects of Dopamine to the surrounding tissues.
