Edgware Road is a major 14 km (10-mile) route in Greater London running from Marble Arch to the suburban town of Edgware, originally a part of the Roman Watling Street. The name also refers to two separate London Underground stations on the Bakerloo line and the Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines, which are distinct from the more distant Edgware station on the Northern line. The road is known for its historical significance, straight line, and as a cultural hub for Arab communities, often called "Little Cairo" or "Little Beirut".
The Road
Origin: It began as a Roman road and is an unusually straight route in London.
Route: It extends from Marble Arch in the city center northwards to the town of Edgware.
Cultural Significance: The area has become a prominent center for Arab culture, with communities from countries like Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria establishing themselves there.
The Tube Stations
There are two London Underground stations named Edgware Road, causing some confusion.
Edgware Road (Circle, District, H&C lines): This station is located at the corner of Chapel Street and Cabbell Street.
Edgware Road (Bakerloo line): A separate station on the opposite side of Marylebone Road, about 150 meters away.
Edgware (Northern line): Do not confuse these stations with the northern terminus of the Northern line, which shares the name but is located far north in the suburb of Edgware.
