The genius of Woody Allen becomes clear when watching these clips from his 1984 masterpiece "Broadway Danny Rose": As the director, he excels at timing, at getting the most out of his actors, and at having an excellent hand in picking his cast. As a writer, he excels as a storyteller, as a man of great fantasy and imagination with an outstanding skill for words and finding the right ones. Last but not least, Woody Allen knows how to pick his collaborators and especially during his "Golden Period" between 1977 and 1997, he often worked with the same people over and over again: Jeffrey Kurland, cotumes; Santo Loquasto, set design; Juliet Taylor, casting; Carlo di Palma, cinematography; not to mention a whole ensemble cast of actors - character actors - such as the brilliant Julie Kavner who appears in numerous Woody Allen films. "Broadway Danny Rose", more than anything else, is a touching, highly imaginative, hommage to Broadway, to those lesser known cabaret artists who are often overlooked but who are so beautifully skilled, and touching in their unassuming, humble, ways!
