Growing up in the U.S., kids sometimes face moments that catch us off guard.

One day, Amelia was playing with some older neighborhood kids. A boy suddenly grabbed her by the neck, and she froze. She didn’t know how to react—she just stood there, tears in her eyes.

She didn’t tell us right away. But a few days later, she quietly said, “I want to learn how to fight.”

At that moment, we knew—she didn’t want to hurt anyone. She just wanted to protect herself. To know what to do when she’s scared.

We enrolled her in judo—not to make her tough, but to help her stand strong, with both body and heart. Her little sister Jeslyn came along to watch…and eventually joined too. Just like in life, they face the world together.

Judo has taught them this:
You can be small, but you don’t have to step back.
You can be gentle, and still have power.

Amelia 曾經跟幾個年紀比較大的鄰居小孩一起玩。那天，一個大男生突然掐住她的脖子，嚇得她整個人僵住了。她不懂怎麼反應，只能忍著眼淚，一動也不動。

回家後她什麼都沒說。過了幾天，她才小聲說：「我想學怎麼打架。」

那一刻我們知道，她不是想變得暴力，而是想學會保護自己，想知道在害怕的時候，該怎麼辦。

我們帶她去學柔道。不是為了讓她變得強硬，而是讓她學會用身體和心一起站穩。妹妹 Jeslyn 常常陪她去練習，後來也一起加入了。就像生活中一樣，兩個人總是一起面對世界。
