Ford 'System Off To Save Battery' Message: Causes And What To Do. In this video tutorial I will show you how to fix Ford's "System Off To Save Battery" message.
Here’s what causes it:
A faulty electric battery sensor (EBS)
In most Ford models, the battery sensor is usually connected to the negative terminal of the battery, and its function is to detect the current coming from your battery and relay signals to shut appliances down if a low charge is detected. When this component malfunctions, it may relay false signals, triggering the "System Off to Save Battery" message.
Low voltage supply
Low voltage supply from the battery can also cause the “System Off to Save Battery" message. Your battery's voltage may drop below the required threshold if your Ford has been parked for an extended period or if the battery is old and worn out, reducing its ability to hold a charge effectively. Also, the issue may stem from a faulty alternator or a malfunction in the battery charging system. Regardless of the underlying reason, a low battery voltage will trigger the message and turn your appliances off.
Now, let’s look at what to do:
Disconnect the battery sensor
To do this:
• Pop up your Ford’s hood and locate your battery’s negative terminal. It’s usually marked with a minus (-) sign.
• Next, locate the circular EBS sensor on the terminal and disconnect it.
• Press the small tub at the bottom of the sensor and pull it off the terminal to disconnect it. Leave the sensor zip-tied to any other cable to avoid unwanted connections.
However, it is worth noting that this fix is merely a temporary solution. You will need to locate the underlying cause, be it a faulty battery or a malfunctioning charging system, and address it for a more permanent solution.
Check the battery
If disconnecting the battery sensor doesn't fix your problem, then you have a low voltage supply from your battery, it's time to give it a look. If the battery has been in use for an extended period, its lifespan may be nearing its end, requiring a replacement. Other causes of a low battery voltage may include:
• Damage to the battery – This will cause the battery not to hold charge for long, necessitating a change, too.
• Damaged wires – Frayed or damaged wires connecting the battery to other systems on the car could also cause voltage leakage, leading to quick power loss. Fixing the wire damages should clear the problem.
• A faulty charging system – A malfunctioning alternator or any other component on the battery's charging system could also result in a low battery voltage.
