Federal budget cuts threaten closure of Nevada's sole Job Corps center

A long-established local workforce development program heard murmurs of bad news last week — the Trump administration is doubling down on its promise to eliminate funding in the recently advanced budget bill in Congress.
Sierra Nevada Job Corps is a vocational training school that offers educational and career training opportunities to students ages 16 to 24 who are experiencing poverty. The program trains and certifies students in one of 15 trades, including welding, carpentry, culinary arts and medical fields. The program opened its doors in Stead in 1979.
SNJC Business Relations Specialist Leslie Mix said Monday that she and her staff were made aware that the campus was facing imminent closure because of a lack of funding from Congress.
“It breaks our hearts. I mean, just absolutely breaks our hearts to think that the government would shut down such an amazing program that does so much — and so much for Nevada,” Mix said.
