Fanny Davies' December 1930 recording of the bulk of Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze Op.6, the first recording of the cycle on disc (albeit not fully complete). She recorded 1, 2, 4-6, 8-14, 17, and 18 (or put another way, she left out pieces 3, 7, 15, and 16).
British-born Davies played her first concerts at the age of six. She studied privately in Birmingham, for studying with Carl Reinecke and Oscar Paul at the Leipzig Conservatory, after which she famously trained with Clara Schumann in Frankfurt. It is particularly for her playing of Schumann for which Davies is remembered: she recorded his Concerto, Kinderszenen, and these Davidsbündlertänze between 1928 and 1930, just a few years before she died.
Aged 69 at the time of this recording, Davies plays with a degree of robustness that is tempered by lyrical phrasing, full-bodied tone, a free sense of rhythm that is nevertheless not exaggerated, and clear lines and textures.
