“Namaz Amar Hoilo Na Aday '' is a Bangla song by Baul sadhak Durbin Shah. It is a remorseful song where the singer regrets not being able to perform their daily Namaz (Islamic prayers) due to various circumstances. During the Namaz of Farjr, he was asleep, during Zuhr, he did not pay attention as to when the time passed, during Asr, he was occupied with work, during Maghrib, he went out to get food for his family and during Isha, he was in the cowshed, waiting for his cow to return. He admits that whatever situations held him back from the prayers, the evil side in him did not let him prioritise the prayers. Throughout the song, the singer repeatedly asks Allah for forgiveness for his deeds.
In Islam, it is believed that Salat (praying five times) is of utmost importance as it prevents and erases sins, solves troubles and helps one get closer to Allah. The direction of the prayers is called Qibla and is done towards facing the Kabba. By not performing the daily prayers five times, the singer fears turning into a Qaafir (ungrateful towards God) and it will be easier for the Shaitan (Devil) to make him sin. According to the Holy Quran, “Allah has built two houses in the heart of man, in one of which an angel resides and in the other, the Khanaas (Shaitan). The angel urges man to do good works and the Shaitan induces him to do evil works. When man remembers Allah, Shaitan withdraws. When he stops remembering Allah, the Shaitan perches on the heart of man and pecks with its beak to whisper into it to do evil things.” This practice continues persistently. Metaphorically, the singer’s cow represents the peace that one gets from spiritual indulgence rather than from temporal gratification. Thematically, the lyrics reflect the worldly materialistic involvements or vices that refrain us from fulfilling our religious duties.
