Nova Express, a jazz rock/soul big band similar to Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears etc originally hailed from Adelaide before moving to Melbourne to further their career. Featuring a young Linda George out front, the band won the Victorian Final of Hoadley's Battle of The Sounds in 1970. They followed up with this, their only single, a cover of Janis Joplin's Piece Of My Heart, which sold well enough to reach the Melbourne Top 25. Linda certainly does fine job without trying to mimic Joplin as she has a distintinctive style & vocal timbre all of her own. But she soon left the band for a highly succesful solo career which saw her vying with Colleen Hewett & Renee Geyer as Australia's most succesful female solo artist in the early to mid 70's with soulful pop hits like "Neither One Of Us" & her signature song "Mama's Little Girl" At the same time she was highly in demand as a session singer & after her solo career faded, she concentrated on that work. In more recent years Linda has taught Contemporary voice at Melbourne University as well as taking on advanced VCE students
