Here is the American Mariner departing Duluth, Minnesota on the afternoon of April 27, 2025. She had delivered a load of limestone to Hallett 8 in Superior and was now outbound for Lake Superior. She would next head north to Thunder Bay, Ontario to take on a load of grain. The video starts shortly after the Mariner left the Hallett 8 dock, as we see her cross the St. Louis River Bay and make her way under the John A. Blatnik bridge. We then briefly see her pass behind the old Interstate Bridge at Rice's Point which is now used as a fishing pier (and occasional ship filming platform). Finally we catch up with her again at Canal Park where she passes under the Aerial Lift Bridge and head out onto Lake Superior.
The American Mariner is one of the workhorses of the Great Lakes which likely doesn't get as much attention as the other lakers. She's not a mammoth like the 1000-footers, nor does she have the graceful lines of a classic laker. She's just a solid performer that can haul a wide variety of loads reliably. And she's also a reliable ship when it comes to giving nice salutes while passing through the shipping canal, which is always appreciated by the boat watchers!
For this departure, I tried something a little different than I normally do while recording ship departures. I'm curious if regular viewers can spot what I did differently... and if it's something they prefer!
The 730-foot American Mariner was launched in 1979 and made her maiden voyage in 1980. Her single propeller is powered by twin 3,600 horsepower V-20 GM diesel engines giving her a rated service speed of 15 mph. She can hold up to 37,300 tons of cargo in seven holds accessed by 24 hatches. Her 250-foot self-unloading boom can unload up to 6,000 tons per hour. She has sailed for the American Steamship Company for her entire career up until 2021 when she was leased to Grand River Navigation. She usually alternates between iron ore (taconite) and grain deliveries, but occasionally can be seen hauling limestone.
