In 1974 The Godfather won an academy award for best original score. I chose to perform this song after having heard it in a movie theater with a whole group of my friends when I was a teen-aged boy. Growing up in Australia with an Italian background, coming out of that movie theater made me feel totally empowered and totally connected with my Italian culture.

Not only was I very interested in music, that connection with my Italian heritage was really was cemented after watching that movie! I came back and started looking for that score, and finding it in a local music school, I started playing it right away.

Hearing The Godfather theme music made me feel really part of my Italian background having both parents coming from Italy. They met in Australia in their young years, were married here, and I was the first of four children. Music played a very important role in my upbringing and in my family. The song makes me feel very nostalgic when I play it as I did not ever meet my grandfather, who was a fine musician in his own right, a mandolin player, and I play this song on my recording in the style of the mandolin. I play the melody and the theme of this song the way a mandolin player would play it, however, I choose to do it on my guitar!

The Godfather is one of the first performance pieces I played to an audience. Even though the music strongly reflects life in Sicily in the 40’s and 50’s, it is very typical of the music from that region, and represents the Italian culture as seen from the “West” beautifully and accurately! I first played this music to a neighbor, a friend of my father’s from Sicily in the driveway of our house – I was a hit at 12 years old! It has been my friend ever since.

Audiences all over the world respond really well to this song. They immediately identify with the song, and easily recognize it as coming from a famous film. The Godfather is actually a trilogy of three films and the theme music was treated in a variety of ways across those three films. I have recorded it on my very first album, Vincenzo Martinelli, as a solo piece with piano accompaniment entitled Theme from the Motion Picture The Godfather. I play this as a waltz, the way it is performed on the first song of the movie’s soundtrack album. The second recording is in an orchestral arrangement and is similarly entitled The Godfather (Theme From the Movie), found on my most recent album, El Toro.

For my second rendition of this wonderful music, I have taken a piece of music from across all three films of the trilogy, made an arrangement of The Godfather themes and had it produced as an orchestral score. I have arranged this second version in a particular way on my El Toro album, taking three of the main themes that I especially like more than the others, and putting them together, playing once again in the mandolin style. I am performing this second more elaborate rendition of The Godfather theme in the live video here, which was recently posted on YouTube as well.

The song remains as a very important part of my repertoire and continues to be enjoyed by people all over the world. I would like to invite you to enjoy The Godfather, either through my albums, the Vincenzo Martinelli self-titled album or on my third and most recent album, El Toro.
