In this special interview, Arshan speaks with 22-year-old Memphis Grizzlies power forward, Jaren Jackson Jr. At just 18 years old, Jaren was the 4th overall pick when he was drafted to the Grizzlies, having played for the Michigan State University Spartans the year prior.
During their conversation, Arshan and Jaren discuss how his team, the Memphis Grizzlies, used to be in Vancouver, and they both agree that the retro Grizzlies’ jerseys are the coolest NBA jerseys. Jaren reveals how he first came across KidsTakeOver from our SoFaygo interview. He talks about his music taste which includes a mix of throwback artists, such as Lil Wayne & Lupe Fiasco, to the new underground scene, including Yeat, Unotheactivist, Playboi Carti, KanKan, and Baby Smoove, who he’s become close friends with since starting his NBA career.
Jaren gives a lot of praise to Playboi Carti, saying him and Lil Uzi Vert are who originally drew him to the underground rap scene. He then lists his top 5 albums of all time, including 1999 by Joey Badass, Faces by Mac Miller, Die Lit by Playboi Carti, Drip Season 3 by Gunna, and all of JuiceWrld’s unreleased music. Next, Jaren ranks the best Carti albums in order: Die Lit (1), Whole Lotta Red (2), Playboi Carti (3). They go into detail about Whole Lotta Red, which Jaren calls “amazing” and lists his favorite songs, including “On That Time”, which he listens to on the way to games at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. Jaren also says he likes Yeat and admires his marketing strategies, something Jaren also has interests in as a rapper himself. He would like to go into A&R ‘ing and admires what someone like Zack Bia does. He says he is constantly working on his own music and recently released his debut album as Trip J, called Suddenly. He mentions being in the running for the DPOY (Defensive Player of the Year) award. Jaren then talks about his relationship with Ja Morant, who he thinks is better than Derrick Rose. He says he idolized Kevin Durant & Lebron James when he first entered the league and that he’s always been a fan of the Oklahoma Thunder. Kids Take Over is based in Vancouver, Canada.
