In Fife, Scotland, two nearby branch lines were freight-only by 1994. One has since been revived as a thriving passenger route, while the other was permanently closed.
At the time of filming, the line running from Thornton Junction North to Methil (Leven) had not seen passenger services since October 1969. However, it remained active for freight, serving the Cameronbridge distillery, Kirkland Yard, and Methil Power Station—the line’s terminus. Freight operations continued until 2001, when Methil Power Station was mothballed. After years of campaigning by local groups, the Scottish Government approved the line’s revival. It officially reopened in May 2024, with scheduled passenger services beginning on 2 June 2024.
The second line, the Westfield Branch, opened in 1965 to serve an opencast mine, transporting coal slurry by rail to fuel Methil Power Station. This line was used until the mine’s closure in 1998, after which it was abandoned and officially shut down.
