Notes on Buying A Home; the year the house was built will tell you a lot about what you should be taking a closer look at in terms of the Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC and Roof systems.
For example, knowing when aluminum wiring commonly used for electric service in homes? And when was 'knob and tube' wiring use discontinued?
When was galvanized pipe used for water supply lines? When was cast iron pipe used for drain lines.
If the home you are considering was built when these things were in use, you will want to look closely at the house to see if they are still in place or have been upgraded.
For more info on the subject, I suggest searching the following: "what to watch out for when buying a home built in 19xx" in your favorite search engine.
Typically the most expensive repairs required for an affordable home are to the four "systems" in a home. Specifically, the Plumbing, the Electrical, the HVAC system and lastly, the Roof.
Plumbing: I have lately been using the information here, as a guideline;

Also, If you are looking at a home built before 1978, it might contain lead-based paint. Lastly you will want to know if there is asbestos in the house?
