The pantograph is what you get when industry marries art. By means of a simple parallel linkage, the strokes of a craftsman’s hands are simultaneously mimicked, scaled down, and multiplied. As the practice of watchmaking became radically industrialized from the mid-nineteenth century onward, machines like the watch case pantograph allowed artistry to be applied to mass production without having to sacrifice one for the other.
