THE SONGBIRD: Irina Zhurina (Ирина Журина) is a Ukranian-born coloratura soprano who was the leading high soprano at the Bolshoi in Moscow primarily during the 1980s. Zhurina made her debut in her hometown at the Kharkiv Opera in 1971. In 1975, she upgraded to the Bolshoi and toured with the company to La Scala, as well as Germany, Great Britain, France, Finland, United States, and Japan. She was made a People's Artist of Russia in 1993, and now teaches singing at the Moscow Conservatory.
THE MUSIC: In this clip, Zhurina is singing a vocal arrangement of a famous waltz from Delibes' ballet "Coppélia," with shining tone up to a High E-flat. This is from a rare vinyl LP set I have on the Melodiya label, released in 1981, so probably recorded just before then. It's worth mentioning the parallels between this life-size doll Coppélia and another life-size coloratura doll, Olympia -- both are based on a short story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and the doll maker's name in both is Coppelius!
