A visit to Rennes, the historic capital of Britanny. The city has a long history going back to Gallic and Roman times. It was one of the major cities of the independent Duchy of Brittany. This duchy eventually became part of the Kingdom of France in 1547 after centuries of struggles. Because of its strategic importance, Rennes was heavily fortified during the Middle Ages. Some traces of Rennes' walls remain. The old town also possesses a large number of historic timber-framed houses.
