Ever heard of the 2 second rule?
It’s a simple way to keep a safe following distance when driving, and the distance is measured in time. 🚗💨
🎥 Here is how it works.
You pick a fixed object that is at the side of the road, it could be a tree, an electrical post, a bridge or an anthill,
When the rear end of the vehicle ahead of you is in line with the fixed object, you start to count “one thousand and one, one thousand and two.”
If you cross the fixed object before you finish your count, then it means you are too close to the vehicle ahead of you and you need to slow down.
When you finish your count and you have not yet crossed the fixed object then you are keeping a safe distance.
Why is this important?
Keeping a safe distance helps you to see the road and car ahead more clearly, it also gives you enough time to react when the vehicle ahead applies emergency breaks.
It is also important to note that when there is poor visibility, the roads are wet, or it is raining, then the count doubles to four seconds.
Always remember “One thousand and one, one thousand and two.”
Safety starts with you!
