English translation:
My beloved! Don’t demand from me the love I gave you in the past.
I assumed life would be radiant as long as you were there.
No anguish in the world could rival the pain of being separated from you.
Your face is what gave permanence to Spring.
There was nothing in the world except the beauty of your eyes.
And, by getting you, Destiny would bow down before me.
Alas! It wasn’t so. I had merely desired it to be so.
The dark and savage enchantment of countless centuries unfolds.
It’s woven into silk, satin and brocade.
Bodies everywhere are selling in lanes and in the marketplace -
Encrusted with dirt and bathed in blood.
My gaze turns towards such sights too! What can I do?
Your beauty is still enchanting, but what can I do?
There are other sorrows in this world besides the pain of love.
There are other delights in this world besides the pleasure of union with the beloved.
My beloved! Don’t demand from me the love I gave you in the past.
