Papamoa Beach is a 14km stretch of white sandy coastline renowned for great swimming and surfing. The family friendly beach gets very busy in the summer but the locals are found surfing here all year round. Ther are good Snapper, Gurnard and Kahawai to be caught off the beach with a surf rod or kontiki and a few kite fisherman are starting to fish from here. Dolphins and Orca are often seen cruising the waves.
Kaiate Falls, just a 15-minute drive from Papamoa, is a multi-step waterfall hidden deep in the forest. Take a 1-hour loop walk to the upper part of the falls before making its way down to the base of the falls. Take State Highway 2 to Kairua then turn onto Welcome Bay Road. Travel 5km then turn on Waitao Road then onto Kaitate Falls Road. Part of the journey is on a gravel road.
