Many believers spend years trying to live the Christian life without ever understanding what actually happened to them when they believed. Romans 6 brings clarity by revealing a truth that is both freeing and deeply settled: something decisive already took place.
In Romans 6:5–7, the Apostle Paul does not urge effort or improvement. He reveals a completed reality. When Christ died, God united us with Him. Our old self was crucified with Christ, and sin’s dominion came to an end. This is not an experience we recreate or a discipline we maintain. It is a fact we now live from.
In this second message of The Abiding Life: Foundations in Romans 6–8, we explore:
• What it means to be united with Christ in His death
• Why Christianity begins with union, not imitation
• Who the “old man” truly is and what happened to him
• How freedom from sin’s dominion flows from death, not effort
• Why striving to become a better Christian no longer fits who you are in Christ
Paul shows us that the gospel does not call us to die. It announces that we already did. And because the old life has ended, the Christian life can no longer be lived by trying. It is lived from Christ Himself, who is now our life.
This message is especially for those who feel weary, confused, or frustrated by self-effort. Romans 6 does not pressure us. It relieves us by pointing us back to what God has already accomplished in His Son.
This teaching is part of our ongoing Romans 6–8 series, where we are learning to rest in Christ’s finished work and live from His indwelling life.
This teaching is also available as an audio podcast for those who prefer to listen. You can find Rooted in Christ on Spotify and other podcast platforms.
This episode only begins to unpack Romans 6:5–7. A more detailed blog post expands the theology of union, the crucifixion of the old man, and why freedom flows from death, not effort. Here is the link: https://www.rootedinchristjournal.com...

Dr. John Woodward, Grace Fellowship International:
"Amen. Just as the cross of Christ is central in the gospel salvation ( 1 Cor 15:3,4), this is also central in the gospel of identification.
This lesson gives a verse by verse explanation for Paul’s testimony in Galatians 2:20. ““I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Most believers have not discerned that the death of the “old man” is past tense. “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God….since you have put off the old man…” (Col 3:3, 9). This is a “game changer”!
As [Believing Thomas] clarifies, the residue of the old man, the “flesh” remains (Rom 7:18) and tugs at us with the “world”, but —hallelujah—the believer really is a new creation spiritually (2 Cor 5:17)!
As we grasp the deeper significance of being baptized into Christ and raised with Him, we can “walk in newness of life.”
The more we understand the truth of these verses in Romans 6, the more confident and consistent we can be in abiding in Christ day by day.
This biblical exposition is so profound and practical. May we review and study it, appropriate the truth, and pass on the good news!
Thank you 😊👍✝️🙏🎉🦅"
