Martha Lidia Oxi Chuy is reshaping the education system to empower Indigenous girls and women to become leaders within their communities.
Despite Indigenous women making up 23% of the Guatemalan population, there is only one Indigenous woman out of 160 seats in Congress. 20% of Indigenous women finish secondary school and 1% graduate from university.
MAIA combines academics, Indigenous Maya culture, socio-emotional learning, and personal development, to teach girls the skills they need to become leaders in decision-making spaces.
To date, 99% of girls who have been through MAIA have passed all their courses. 👏
