Yesterday I reviewed 15 software engineers’ resumes.
I found the exact same mistakes I made 6 years ago.

When I fixed those mistakes,
I started getting interview calls.

I’m on a mission to help Bangladeshi professionals grow globally

I recorded personalized resume reviews and sent them to those engineers.

Here are the common mistakes that need immediate fixing:

1️⃣ Profile Picture
I recommend not using a photo.
Photos can unintentionally introduce bias or racism during shortlisting.
No photo = no visual judgment.

2️⃣ Career Summary
I don’t use one.
My resume is one page and only contains essential information.
A summary often repeats unnecessary details.

3️⃣ Too Much Personal Information
Avoid anything that creates bias:
• Language
• Hobbies
• Nationality
• Government ID numbers

Keep it professional and relevant.

4️⃣ References
Companies ask for references after selection.
No need to put them upfront.

5️⃣ More Than One Page
HR spends 30–60 seconds per resume.
If it’s more than one page, the rest usually gets skipped.

I know some of you may disagree.

But I made these mistakes myself —
and fixed them by learning from people who succeeded before me.

Yes, some HRs have personal preferences.
But we must optimize for the general case, not exceptions.

My recommended ideal resume structure:
1. Personal Info
(Name, Email, LinkedIn, Phone, City & Country)
2. Skills
3. Experience
4. Education
5. Professional Certifications

That’s it.
You don’t need more to get shortlisted.
