On April 14, 2024, a group of 5 of us set out to capture Amtrak California Zephyr Trains 5 and 6 that were both running with notable power. Amtrak 6 had Phase I 50th Anniversary P42DC 161 in the lead, and the Zephyr is seen at McClellan Park and then followed to Rocklin. Coming into the picture was a surprise, a late Amtrak Coast Starlight 11 is photographed on the former Western Pacific at Pleasant Grove, again with more notable power in the form of 2 ALC42s in Amtrak's short lived Phase VI paint scheme. After the Starlight a BNSF autorack train makes its way north passing the searchlights as a bonus.
The Station stop of train 11 in Sacramento gave us time to beat the train over to the Yolo Causeway where we get one more look at the ALC42s. After Number 11, we headed up the the hill to Carpenter Road just east of Colfax to catch Amtrak 5 with the 2 Phase VII P42DCs. The westbound Zephyr is followed from Carpenter to just west of Roseville. Once the Amtraks were out of the picture, more train action was heard on the radio on on the former Western Pacific, so we went up highway 65 to Marysville to photograph Union Pacific and BNSF action (with some Canadian Pacific foreign power) between the former WP depot and Pleasant Grove to round out the day.
Enjoy this action packed and variety filled day of railfanning!
