From here, we begin our odyssey to a place no less steeped in myth and romance - Russia’s wild South. Although politically unified with the rest of European Russia, the North Caucasus is altogether a culturally separate entity. The first step on this journey is the midnight train to Rostov-on-Don in humble, third-class lodgements. Along the way, we encounter a fastidious conductress, high winds and the charming “Socialism Street”. Onward.
