Most fans can agree that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen went a little overboard in more than a few areas. Still, from a purely visual effects standpoint, the movie is an absurd showcase of technical achievements. At the time of release, Industrial Light & Magic created the biggest and most detailed CGI character they had ever attempted, pushed through some of the longest rendering times in history, and staged what was (then) the largest on-screen explosion involving actors—all on top of carrying the highest budget of any film made up to that point. But while all that sounds incredible on paper, what does it actually mean when you look at how this film’s visual effects were crafted?
